Fixation disparity in relation to heterophoria.

چکیده
The phenomenon of fixation disparity is of interest in the study of fusional processes in patients with single binocular vision. An understanding of its mechanism is of im portance in the pathogenesis of strabismus. The clinical determination of the amount and type of fixation disparity relative to its practical clinical and therapeutic implications has been discussed elsewhere. The present study describes a laboratory determination of the type and amount of fixation disparity existing under approximately natural visual conditions.

The relationship between fixation disparity and heterophoria.
Twenty-five asymptomatic subjects with normal binocular vision underwent determination of the magnitude and direction of their heterophoria and their fixation disparity. Fixation disparity was measured at a 2-m fixation distance with the phase-difference haploscope under conditions simulating those of casual seeing. When combined with careful attention to symmetrical control of accommodation, t...
متن کاملIndividual Objective and Subjective Fixation Disparity in Near Vision
Binocular vision refers to the integration of images in the two eyes for improved visual performance and depth perception. One aspect of binocular vision is the fixation disparity, which is a suboptimal condition in individuals with respect to binocular eye movement control and subsequent neural processing. The objective fixation disparity refers to the vergence angle between the visual axes, w...
متن کاملThe Mallett Fixation Disparity Test: influence of test instructions and relationship with symptoms.
Fixation disparity is a minute ocular misalignment under conditions of binocular single vision and is typically detected in primary eye care practices in the UK using the Mallett Unit Fixation Disparity Test. This instrument creates natural viewing conditions, when the patient's binocular system is fused using both central and peripheral fusion locks. This allows the examiner to determine the m...
متن کاملObjective vs subjective measures of fixation disparity for short and long fixation periods.
PURPOSE Fixation disparity, i.e. the vergence error for stationary fusion stimuli, can be measured objectively with eye trackers and subjectively with nonius lines. Between these two measures, previous studies found differences that tended to be proportional to the amount of forced vergence, i.e. the discrepancy between vergence and accommodative stimulus. We investigate whether objective and s...
متن کاملIs the Aligning Prism Measured with the Mallett Unit Correlated with Fusional Vergence Reserves?
BACKGROUND The Mallett Unit is a clinical test designed to detect the fixation disparity that is most likely to occur in the presence of a decompensated heterophoria. It measures the associated phoria, which is the "aligning prism" needed to nullify the subjective disparity. The technique has gained widespread acceptance within professions such as optometry, for investigating suspected cases of...
